New kind of police cooperation between Finland and Sweden to begin on 1 July 2026
Finland and Sweden will implement an agreement on cross-border police cooperation from 1 July 2026 allowing police patrols to cross the national border to handle urgent emergency tasks affecting life and health in specified Finnish border municipalities. The agreement, signed in 2021 and enacted in 2025, covers Finnish municipalities Enontekiö, Kolari, Muonio, Pello, Tornio and Ylitornio and assigns Finnish operational units for patrol operations and decision-making.
